COP30 Progress and Missed Opportunities

COP30 Progress and Missed Opportunities
COP30 has concluded, marking important steps forward in the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Countries agreed to strengthen their climate plans (NDCs) and to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels.
But despite these advances, the conference failed to deliver on one of its most crucial tasks. Led by the EU, 88 countries pushed for a concrete global plan to phase out fossil fuels, but they did not succeed. As Al Gore put it: “Oil states and their political allies are doing everything they can to prevent the world from solving the climate crisis.”
At the same time, the voice of civil society grew stronger. Demonstrations and engagement from local communities and Indigenous peoples filled the streets of Belém, showing a deep and determined desire for change.
For SWEDO, COP30 underscores both the need for continued global cooperation and the importance of civil society in driving fair and sustainable solutions especially for the most vulnerable communities
