PRESS RELEASE – SWEDO is still present in Syria

SWEDO, The Swedish Development Aid Organization, is still present in north-east Syria. The security situation has affected SWEDO’s ongoing activities, and they are now on hold. We have taken all the necessary security measures for our staff.

We continue to be in the area and are closely monitoring the situation. “We are ready to relaunch existing projects, and we have also increased our readiness to continue and scale up our support for IDPs and refugees from both sides of the Iraq-Syria border,” says Daniel Madhani, Secretary-General of SWEDO.

The armed conflict is increasing refugee flows in the north-eastern parts and throughout the region. At the same time, reports show that the majority of international NGOs are leaving the area, which minimizes the access to protection and necessary humanitarian support for civilians. SWEDO expresses its deep concern over the security issues and the lack of basic humanitarian relief for civilians trapped in the ongoing armed conflict between various forces.

We know from experience that women and children are often the worst affected by conflict. We urge all parties involved to protect the civilians. “We will continue our humanitarian engagement in both Iraq and Syria as long as there is a need for humanitarian assistance,” says Khalid Hussein, head of SWEDOS humanitarian operations in Syria.
